THE SECRETS OF LASTING LOVE

1.  Lasting Love Extends Grace

LOVE IS NOT EASILY ANGERED

Love is not easily angered.  1 Corinthians 13:5 NIV

HOW DO YOU TAME YOUR TEMPER?


1.  Resolve To Manage It
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.  Proverbs 29:11 TLB


2.  Remember The Cost
A hot-tempered man . . . gets into all kinds of trouble.  Proverbs 29:22 TLB


Proverbs 15:18 GNB             Hot tempers cause arguments.

Proverbs 14:29 TLB         . . . anger causes mistakes.

Proverbs 14:17 GNB       People with hot tempers do foolish things.


The fool who provokes his family to anger and resentment will finally have nothing worthwhile left.  Proverbs 11:29 TLB


3.  Reflect Before Reacting
A stupid man gives free rein to his anger; a wise man waits and lets it grow cool.  Proverbs 29:11 NEB

A man's wisdom gives him patience.  Proverbs 19:11 NIV

     Ask 3 questions:

Lord, help me control my tongue; help me be careful about what I say.  Psalm 141:3 NCV

Drinking too much makes you loud and foolish. It's stupid to get drunk.  Proverbs 20:1 TEV


4.  Release My Anger Appropriately
If you become angry, don’t let your anger lead you into sin.  Ephesians 4:26 GNB

A gentle answer quiets anger, but a harsh one stirs it up.  Proverbs 15:1 TEV


5.  Re-Pattern Your Mind
Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.  Romans 12:2a NLT

Keep away from angry, short-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them...  Proverbs 22:24 NLT


6.  Rely On God’s Help
Patience and encouragement come from God. I pray God will help you all agree with each other the way Christ Jesus wants.  Romans 15:5 NCV

The fruit of the Spirit is...patience  Galatians 5:22 NIV

May 10, 2009 - Part 4

"Love is not rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and loves keeps no record of when it has been wronged."  1 Cor. 13:5 NLT

4 MARKS OF REAL LOVE


Love Is Not Rude.  So...

1.  I Must Be Tactful, Not Just Truthful

Answering before listening is both stupid and rude.  Proverbs 18:13 MSG

Stop being bitter and angry and mad at others. Don’t yell at one another or curse each other or ever be rude. Instead, be kind and merciful, and forgive others, just as God forgave you because of Christ.  Ephesians 4:31-32 CEV

A wise, mature person is known for his understanding. The more pleasant his words, the more persuasive he is.  Proverbs 16:21 TEV


Love Does Not Demand Its Own Way.   So...

2.  I Must Be Understanding, Not Demanding

Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form.  Philippians 2:5-7 NLT

Believers shouldn't curse anyone or be quarrelsome, but they should be gentle and show courtesy to everyone.  Titus 3:2 GW

A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.  Proverbs 19:11 NIV

Do to others as you would have them do to you.  Luke 6:31 NIV


Love Is Not Irritable.    So...

3.  I Must Be Gentle Not Judgmental

Brothers and sisters, if someone in your group does something wrong, you who are spiritual should go to that person and gently help make him right again. But be careful, because you might be tempted to sin, too.  Galatians 6:1 NCV

Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  Colossians 3:13 NIV

Each of us will give an account of himself to God.  Therefore, let us stop passing judgment on each other.  Romans 14:12-13 NIV

Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.  Proverbs 15:4 NLT

If your boss is angry with you, don't quit! A quiet spirit can overcome even great mistakes.  Ecclesiastes 10:4 NLT


Love Keeps No Record Of Wrongs.   So...

4. You Don’t Repeat It, You Delete It

Do not bear a grudge against others, but settle your differences with them, so that you will not commit a sin because of them.  Leviticus 19:17 TEV

Love forgets mistakes; nagging about them parts the best of friends.  Proverbs 17:9 TLB

Gossip is spread by wicked people; they stir up trouble and break up friendships.  Proverbs 16:28 TEV

         "Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him and let it drop, leave it, and let it go, in order that your Father who is in heaven may also forgive you your own failings and shortcomings and let them drop."  Mark 11:25 Amp

Hate stirs up trouble, but love forgives all offenses.  Proverbs 10:12 TEV

When someone wrongs you, it is a great virtue to ignore it.  Prov 19:11 TEV

LOVING WITH YOUR WORDS

My mouth Directs where I go

My mouth can Destroy what I have

My mouth Displays who I really am


"Words flow out of what fills the heart." Matthew 12:34 NJB

1. Love People with Honest words

...speaking the truth in love... Ephesians 4:15a NIV

An open rebuke is better than hidden love!    Proverbs 27:5 NLT

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  1 Corinthians 13:6 NIV


2.  Love People with Careful Words
In your anger do not sin.  Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Ephesians 4:26-27 NIV

A gossip separates close friends.    Proverbs 16:28b NIV

Watch your words and hold your tongue; you'll save yourself a lot of grief. Proverbs 21:23 MSG


    3. Love People with Building Words

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs...   Ephesians 4:29 NIV

Gentle words: Break through anger

Pleasant words: Encourage learning

Pleasant words promote instruction.  Proverbs 16:21b NIV


Honest words: Make us feel loved

An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.  Proverbs 24:26


Wise words: Heal broken hearts

LOVE MATTERS MOST

3 LAWS OF LOVE

I. The Best Use of Life is love

Why? Love validates my faith

"Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."  1 John 4:8 NIV

"If we say we love God, but hate others, we are liars. For we cannot love God, whom we have not seen, if we do not love others, whom we have seen."  1 John 4:20 TEV

Why? Love integrates my life

"Love is more important than anything else. It is what ties everything completely together."  Colossians 3:14 CEV

Why? Love compensates for sin

"Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins."  1 Peter 4:8 NLT

"God wiped out the charges that were against us for disobeying his Law. He took them away and nailed them to the cross."  Colossians 2:14 CEV

Why? Love reverberates forever

"Three things will continue forever: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love."  1 Corinthians 13:13 NCV

II. The Best Expression of Love is time

What It Means To Believe In Jesus

Accept His Grace

Invest My Life In Him

Trust His Wisdom & Strength

A Believer’s Prayer

Dear Jesus, I want to have a real faith in You, not a fake faith.  Thank You for dying for my sins and showing me the way to live.  Today I want to become a true believer in You.  I want to follow Your example.  I want to accept Your gift of grace.  I need Your forgiveness and mercy.  You made me for a purpose and I want to invest my life in serving You.  I want to trust Your wisdom and strength. I want to hold on to Your promises when times are tough. Amen

The Basics of Love


We love because God loves us.

"Love comes from God...for God is love."  1 John 4:7-8 NLT

"We know and rely on the love God has for us."  1John 4:16a NIV


Love is a choice and a commitment.

"Choose to love the Lord your God...and commit yourself to him..."  Deut. 30:20 NLT


Love is action, not just emotion.

"Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth."  1 John 3:18 NIV


Love is a skill I can learn.

"Dear friends, let us practice loving each other, for love comes from God and those who are loving and kind show that they are the children of God, and that they are getting to know him better."  1 John 4:7 LB

Love is a habit..
